Start with condition, not convenience

Option 2: Confirm a dedicated recycling service

Mattress recycling is different from ordinary curbside recycling. A mattress contains a mix of fabric, foam, steel, wood, and adhesives, so it does not belong in a blue recycling bin or a general bottle-and-can drop-off.

Sleep Cycle PGH identifies itself as a Bridgeville mattress and box-spring recycler. The business says it recovers steel, foam, and wood and states in its body copy that recovery can reach 75 percent. Treat that percentage as the operator’s claim, not an independently audited guarantee.

Important residential details are not published on the site. It does not give a public drop-off address, residential fee, exact service area, condition screen, or clear pickup terms. Option 3: Use retailer haul-away with a replacement purchase

Some mattress retailers offer removal as part of a delivery package. For example, Mattress Firm’s current delivery guide describes a setup and haul-away option that can remove an old mattress and box spring. This can solve the timing problem because the old bed leaves when the new one arrives. It does not automatically prove that the old mattress will be recycled.

Before checkout, ask four direct questions:

• Does the service remove both the mattress and box spring?
• Must both pieces be stripped, dry, and free of pests?
• Will the crew carry them from the room, or must they be at the door?
• Is the destination reuse, recycling, or disposal, and is that outcome documented?

The City does not individually name a clean mattress on the current curbside page, so confirm an unusual, contaminated, or mixed-material item through 311.

Set-out begins at 6 p.m. the night before collection. Material must be accessible by 6 a.m. on collection day. Place it at the curb or roadway edge in the property’s normal collection location without blocking the sidewalk, street, or other public right-of-way.

If a mattress or upholstered furniture contains bedbugs or cockroaches, the 2026 mailer requires it to be wrapped or sealed in plastic. The City does not state that every clean mattress needs plastic. Never conceal an infestation from a donation program, recycler, retailer, or pickup crew.

A bed set is not one material. A mattress, upholstered box spring, solid-metal rail system, wood platform, slats, headboard, and hardware can require different routes.
