Can You Put a Mattress Out With Pittsburgh Trash?

The short answer

Yes, an eligible City of Pittsburgh household can generally put a mattress out with the regular weekly bulk refuse route. The City’s current rules define oversized household waste as bulk, accept furniture and bulk waste, and do not list mattresses or box springs among prohibited materials. The 2026 refuse mailer confirms weekly bulk pickup and a two-item limit per household.

There are important limits. The address must receive City collection. The mattress must go out in the legal time window and normal collection location. It cannot obstruct the sidewalk or street. A mattress containing bedbugs or cockroaches must be wrapped or sealed in plastic. The City does not publish a rule saying whether a mattress and separate box spring count as one set or two bulk items.

When that last point affects the set-out, treat the two pieces as the household’s full two-item allowance or confirm through Pittsburgh 311. This is more reliable than applying a rule from another city or an old Pittsburgh PDF.

First confirm that the property receives City collection

Pittsburgh municipal refuse collection generally covers single-family homes and residential buildings with five or fewer units. Under Chapter 619 of the Pittsburgh Code, residential buildings with six or more units must use a private collector.

A Pittsburgh mailing address alone does not establish City service. Nearby boroughs and townships have their own contracts, limits, schedules, and preparation rules. A renter in a larger building may also have a property-managed dumpster or contracted collection even when the street is inside Pittsburgh.

Use the current two-item bulk limit

The City’s 2026 refuse and recycling calendar says bulk pickup is weekly and permits a maximum of two bulk items per household.

That current figure matters because an older City regulations PDF uses a three-item limit. The older document also uses different set-out times. Follow the current municipal code and 2026 resident mailer, not a search result excerpt from the 2005 PDF.

The City does not expressly answer these counting questions:

• Is a mattress and box spring one set or two bulk items?
• Does a disassembled frame count by original item or by separate pieces?
• How are several bundled frame rails counted?

Do not claim a favorable interpretation. Plan conservatively: a mattress plus box spring may use both allowed items. If a frame must go too, split the job across collection weeks, use a verified metal or donation route, or ask 311 how Environmental Services wants the exact set prepared.

Put it out between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Current Pittsburgh law permits set-out beginning at 6 p.m. on the evening before collection. The item must be accessible by 6 a.m. on collection day. Refuse containers must be removed by 10 p.m. after collection.

Do not leave a mattress outside for several days. In addition to exposing it to rain and creating a neighborhood obstruction, Pittsburgh’s outdoor-furniture rules prohibit keeping or storing a mattress or box spring in a visible yard, patio, or unenclosed porch, deck, or balcony. Keep the mattress inside or out of public view until the lawful set-out time.

Place it where the property normally presents refuse. Chapter 619 calls for an accessible single location at the roadway or curb edge, no more than five feet back, without obstructing the public right-of-way. Do not block a sidewalk, travel lane, fire hydrant, driveway, or access to neighboring refuse.

If the regular collection point is an alley, do not move the mattress to the front curb simply because there is more room. Use the established location or ask 311 before changing it.

Wrap items containing bedbugs or cockroaches

The 2026 City mailer gives a specific health and worker-safety instruction: a mattress or upholstered furniture containing bedbugs or cockroaches must be wrapped or sealed in plastic, or it will not be collected.

That is not the same as a rule requiring every clean mattress to be wrapped. The current City mailer does not say clean mattresses need plastic. Avoid adding plastic based on advice from another municipality unless 311 gives a case-specific instruction.

If pests are present:

1. Do not offer the mattress for donation or reuse.
2. Disclose the condition to any recycler, retailer, or private pickup company before service.
3. Seal or wrap it before it passes through shared indoor space or reaches the curb.
4. Keep the covering intact through collection.

Do not drag an uncovered infested mattress through a common hallway or lean it against shared building surfaces while preparing it.

Do not convert excluded material into a mattress load

A mattress set can attract unrelated cleanup material. Keep prohibited or special-handling items out of the pile. The City excludes tires, covered electronics, hazardous or infectious waste, explosive or flammable material, auto parts, refrigerant appliances, batteries, light bulbs, wet or oil-based paint, and named construction materials.

What City service does not include

The municipal bulk route starts at the collection point. Current City instructions do not promise that a crew will enter a home, carry a mattress down stairs, dismantle a frame, or remove items from a garage.

The City has a medical accommodation process for an eligible resident who lives alone or lacks another able-bodied person to move refuse and recycling to the curb. The published process includes a physician form, review, a foreman visit, and an affidavit, and it may establish an alternate collection site. It should not be described as an on-demand in-home mattress removal service.

If the mattress is still there after collection

The City’s missed-pickup instructions allow a 311 report when correctly prepared, accepted material was set out on time and missed. A forgotten or late set-out is not a missed collection. Neither is material left because it was prohibited or prepared incorrectly.

Before reporting:

• Confirm that the regular refuse route has completed the block.
• Check for a sticker or notice explaining why the item remained.
• Confirm the item count, time, placement, wrapping, and property eligibility.
• Photograph the set-out without capturing neighbors or private information.
• Submit the address and facts through 311, then retain the service-request number.

Do not leave the mattress in public view indefinitely. If the City identifies a preparation or eligibility problem, bring it back onto the property and correct the issue or arrange another route.

Ask a concrete question: “At this City-served address, does one queen mattress plus one separate box spring count as the two allowed bulk items for this week’s refuse route?” A precise item list and address produce a more useful answer than asking whether “a bed” is accepted.

• The mattress is household bulk, not part of a commercial or construction load.
