Treat the bed as separate components

To dispose of a bed frame and box spring in Pittsburgh, begin by listing the pieces and materials. A mattress, upholstered box spring, solid-metal rail frame, wood platform, slats, headboard, footboard, adjustable base, and loose hardware do not automatically share one recycling or donation route.

Sorting first prevents two common mistakes: taking a mixed-material box spring to a metal-only drop-off, and loading an entire bed for a donation organization that accepts only some pieces.

Box spring: keep the material mix together unless a program says otherwise

A traditional box spring or foundation may contain fabric, wood, padding, metal springs, staples, and fasteners. That mix is why an intact box spring should not be put into a scrap-metal dumpster based only on the steel inside.

Check reuse first when the box spring is clean, dry, structurally sound, odor-free, and free of pests. The Blessing Board’s current list accepts box springs that meet its condition standards. The organization rejects damaged, heavily stained, torn, odorous, smoky, urine-exposed, pest-exposed, dry-rotted, or moldy items.

Off the Floor Pittsburgh no longer accepts used mattresses, but its current item list accepts qualifying box springs in twin, twin XL, full, and queen sizes. Because its pages have shown conflicting drop-off-hour details, confirm item approval and current receiving hours before traveling.

Do not cut a box spring open merely to expose metal unless the receiving recycler or scrap facility instructs you to do so. Disassembly creates sharp staples, nails, wire, fabric, and wood that require safe containment and may still be rejected.

Solid-metal frame: donation or scrap-metal drop-off

A simple steel rail frame has more options than a mixed frame. It may qualify for donation if it is complete, functional, and safe. The Blessing Board accepts metal bed frames but not wooden frames, headboards, or footboards.

For a frame that is no longer reusable, the City has specifically identified a solid-metal bed frame as a scrap-metal example. The current Pittsburgh recycling drop-off page lists scrap-metal dumpsters at three divisions:

The Strip District recycling drop-off does not accept scrap metal. Hours and operational access can change, so call the selected division before loading a long or unusually heavy frame.

Separate obvious nonmetal attachments when they can be removed safely. Do not place wood rails, upholstered panels, fabric, foam, a whole box spring, or an electric adjustable base in a scrap-metal dumpster without direct approval.

Wood frames, slats, headboards, and footboards

Wood bed components need a recipient that expressly accepts furniture of that type and condition. Do not infer acceptance from a program’s mattress listing. The Blessing Board’s current list excludes wooden frames, headboards, and footboards.

For a reusable frame, send clear photos of the complete assembled item and its hardware to a reuse organization before taking it apart. Record the brand or model if known, dimensions, missing parts, repairs, damage, and whether the hardware is bagged. A frame with missing center supports or specialized fasteners may not be immediately usable.

For a damaged household wood frame, City bulk collection or a paid pickup may be appropriate after confirmation. Do not mix bedroom furniture with renovation debris. The City excludes named construction and demolition materials, and a stack of cut lumber from remodeling is not the same as a household bed frame.

If disassembly creates several rails and slats, tie or box the hardware so pieces do not scatter. Pittsburgh’s current 2026 mailer gives a five-foot and 35-pound limit for bundled fencing, carpet, and wood. A bed frame is not expressly named in that bundle instruction, so do not apply the dimension as permission without confirming the exact preparation through 311.

Adjustable bases need a separate check

An adjustable base may include a motor, wiring, power supply, remote, USB components, batteries, steel, upholstery, and wood. It is not equivalent to a simple manual metal frame.

Before choosing a route:

1. Unplug the base and locate the manufacturer’s moving or disassembly instructions.
2. Remove loose remotes and detachable power supplies without cutting wiring.
3. Identify any battery backup.
4. Ask the receiving provider whether it accepts a powered adjustable base as furniture, scrap metal, electronics, or mixed bulk.
5. Give the full weight, dimensions, floor, stairs, and lift requirements to a pickup company.

Do not dismantle electrical or spring-loaded mechanisms without the manufacturer’s instructions. A pickup crew needs to know that the item is powered and substantially heavier than ordinary rails.

Apply Pittsburgh’s two-item bulk limit conservatively

The City’s 2026 refuse mailer limits a household to two bulk items on the weekly refuse route. It does not publish a special counting rule for a mattress set or a disassembled frame.

A mattress, box spring, and frame are visibly separate pieces. Do not assume the City counts all three as one “bed.” A conservative plan is:

• Week 1: mattress and box spring
• Week 2: frame or remaining furniture

Another option is to donate or recycle the metal frame and reserve curbside space for the mattress and foundation. If timing prevents a split set-out, ask 311 how the exact pieces count or use a pickup service.

The legal set-out window starts at 6 p.m. the evening before collection, and material must be accessible by 6 a.m. Keep mattresses and box springs indoors or out of public view before that time. • Use the manufacturer’s instructions for adjustable or specialized bases.
• Work with enough people for the weight and stairs; do not rely on a mattress as a slide.

• Tape the hardware bag to a donated frame only if the recipient approves that method.
