Mattress Pickup in Pittsburgh: When You Need Help Moving It

“Mattress pickup” can describe several different services in Pittsburgh. City bulk collection takes an eligible item from the curb on the weekly refuse route. A nonprofit may pick up a clean mattress that it has accepted for reuse. A retailer may remove an old bed when delivering a new one. A recycler may offer collection within a service area. A full-service hauler may carry a mattress from an upstairs room and choose a destination after inspection.

The first question is not which truck can arrive fastest. It is where the mattress is now and where it should go.

• If the mattress is already at the normal curb location and the property receives City service, municipal bulk pickup may be enough.
• If it is clean and ready for another household, condition-based donation pickup may preserve reuse.
• If material recovery is the goal, confirm a recycler’s residential collection terms.

City bulk pickup begins at the curb

The City’s curbside service page describes weekly collection of household refuse and bulk waste. It does not promise that Environmental Services crews will enter a residence, dismantle a bed, carry a mattress through a hallway, or move it down stairs.

City service can be the right answer when all of these conditions are met:

• The property receives municipal collection, generally a single-family home or residential building with five or fewer units.
• Someone can safely move the mattress to the property’s normal collection location.
• The set-out stays within the current two-bulk-item household limit.
• The mattress is placed after 6 p.m. the night before and accessible by 6 a.m.
• Any mattress containing bedbugs or cockroaches is sealed or wrapped in plastic.

The City publishes a medical accommodation process for an eligible resident who lives alone or does not have another able-bodied person to move refuse or recycling. The process involves medical documentation, review, a foreman visit, and an affidavit, and may establish an alternate collection site. It should not be treated as immediate in-home mattress removal.

Donation pickup is an acceptance service, not disposal

The Blessing Board accepts qualifying mattresses except king and toddler sizes, plus box springs and metal frames. Items must be clean, functional, immediately usable, and free of damage, heavy stains, tears, pet hair or odor, smoke, urine, bedbugs, dry rot, and mold. It does not accept wooden frames, headboards, or footboards.

Its current donation FAQ lists pickup Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee varies with the items, moving difficulty, and distance. That fee does not make an unusable mattress eligible.

Before requesting pickup:

1. Compare the mattress size and every bed component with the current accepted-item list.
2. Photograph each item in clear light, including damage-prone edges and surfaces.
3. Disclose stairs, tight turns, elevator limits, long walks, and parking restrictions.
4. Receive condition approval and the pickup terms before removing the bed from use.
5. Have a backup recycling or disposal route in case the item is declined at inspection.

Do not leave a mattress outside for a donation pickup unless the organization specifically instructs you to do so. Rain or contamination can turn a qualifying bed into an unusable item.

Recycler pickup must be confirmed directly

Sleep Cycle PGH identifies itself as a Bridgeville mattress and box-spring recycler, but its site does not publish clear residential pickup terms, exact service boundaries, pricing, or condition exclusions. Call 412-559-8528 with the size, type, quantity, condition, ZIP code, access, and preferred timing.

Ask whether the quote includes carry-out or only curbside loading. Ask whether the mattress will be processed for material recovery and what documentation is available. A recycler’s vehicle collection and a full-service moving crew are not necessarily the same service.

Retailer haul-away can coordinate the replacement

A delivery-and-removal package may avoid storing two mattresses or making a separate appointment. It is most useful when the retailer confirms the old item, carry-out path, and timing in writing.

Before checkout, confirm:

• Mattress and box-spring sizes included
• Whether an adjustable base or frame is included
• Removal from the bedroom versus pickup at the door
• Pest, moisture, stain, and damage restrictions
• Stairs, elevator, and parking requirements
• The exact fee and cancellation terms
• Whether the destination is reuse, recycling, or disposal

Strip bedding and clear the route only after reviewing the delivery instructions. Do not dismantle an adjustable base unless the manufacturer or delivery team specifies how.

Full-service hauling is for access, timing, or mixed loads

Full-service mattress pickup becomes relevant when the job includes stairs, a narrow row-house turn, no elevator, several bed pieces, an urgent move-out date, or other household items that need one trip.

The Junkluggers of Pittsburgh says its mattress service can remove all sizes and conditions from inside and provides an on-site quote. Its page says donation or recycling may occur after inspection. That language is conditional, and the page does not identify a guaranteed receiving facility for every mattress.

Junk King Pittsburgh also advertises in-home mattress removal and a free estimate. The local branch describes volume-based pricing and says it routes items to donation or recycling when possible. Its published overall diversion percentage is not a mattress-specific guarantee.

These providers are examples with current local pages, not a promise that either is the right match for a particular job. Compare the complete written scope, destination, insurance, availability, and quote.

Build an accurate pickup inventory

A useful request lists every piece. “One bed” is too vague for labor, truck space, acceptance, and destination planning.

Include:

• Mattress size: crib, twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, or split set
• Mattress type: foam, innerspring, hybrid, air, water, hospital, or unknown
• Separate foundation or box spring, including split pieces
• Manual metal frame, wood frame, platform, slats, headboard, and footboard
• Adjustable power base, motor, remote, cords, and battery backup

Photos should show the items and route without exposing personal documents, faces, access codes, or valuables.

Do a row-house access check

Many Pittsburgh homes have narrow stairs, sharp landings, small vestibules, or limited curb access. Measure before the crew arrives:

1. Mattress width, length, and thickness
2. Narrowest door opening after accounting for hinges and handles
3. Stair width above the handrail
4. Landing depth and ceiling clearance at turns
5. Porch steps and door swing
6. Distance to a place where the truck may legally stop

Tell the company about unusual access before accepting the quote. An accurate access description protects the walls, stair rail, crew, and resident and reduces the chance of a revised on-site scope.

Compare quotes without an invented price range

The verified local pages reviewed for this guide do not provide one dependable residential mattress-pickup price. The Blessing Board says its donation pickup fee varies by item, difficulty, and distance. Junk-removal providers use on-site or volume-based quotes. Publishing a generic range would hide the job-specific factors that change the total.

Ask each provider whether the quote includes:

• Carry-out labor and extra-worker charges
• Stairs, elevator delays, long carry, or dismantling
• Mattress, box spring, frame, and every additional item
• Truck, fuel, pickup, and travel
• Recycling, donation, transfer, or disposal fees
• Taxes, minimum load, same-day, or cancellation charges
• Cleanup after removal

Get the total and scope in writing. If the company cannot finalize the price until seeing the items, ask what facts can change the on-site quote and whether you may decline without a charge.

Ask where the mattress will go

The City of Pittsburgh’s waste-disposal guidance advises residents to request a disposal-facility receipt from a paid hauler before paying in full. This is especially useful when a mattress is unusable and disposal is the expected route.

For reuse or recycling claims, ask for the named receiving organization or facility. “We recycle when possible” is a goal, not proof that this mattress qualifies. The destination may depend on condition after carry-out.

Never conceal bedbugs, cockroaches, mold, moisture, smoke, urine, or structural damage. Disclosure protects workers and allows the provider to choose correct equipment and routing. An infested mattress must not be donated.
