Pittsburgh Trash Pickup Schedule and Holiday Dates: 2026

Thanksgiving trash pickup: November 23–28, 2026

Thursday and Friday City routes move one day later. These dates are our calculation from the City’s published 2026 holiday rule, checked September 11. They are a planning reference, not a separate Thanksgiving service announcement.

Have everything out by 6 a.m. on the pickup date and retrieve containers by 10 p.m. These are local Pittsburgh times. If you leave town for Thanksgiving, plan around the set-out night in your row; do not leave containers out early because you will be away.

Christmas trash pickup: December 21–26, 2026

Only Friday routes move because of Christmas. Christmas Eve is Thursday; the published collection list identifies Christmas Day, December 25, as the delay holiday.

The same 6 a.m. deadline applies. A holiday delay does not add a recycling collection to an off-week. Confirm your address’s recycling week before putting the blue bin out. Check holiday packaging in the recycling item guide.

Fall dates that need a different check

• Leaves and branches: use the November 7 yard-waste preparation guide. Special yard collection is a separate service from a holiday-delayed refuse route.
• Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Veterans Day: neither appears in the City’s published 2026 collection-delay list checked September 11. Do not infer a trash delay from an office or school closure; confirm City alerts for your week.
• New Year’s Day 2027 and tree recycling after Christmas 2026: check for the new season’s official notice. A January 2026 tree-drop-off announcement describes the previous holiday season and cannot establish January 2027 dates or locations.

For Labor Day week 2026, the same rule moved Monday–Friday routes to Tuesday, September 8 through Saturday, September 12. This historical example is separate from the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas tables.

Start with the address, not a neighborhood guess

The fastest reliable way to find a City of Pittsburgh collection day is to begin on the City’s Collection Schedule and Newsletter page and open PGH.ST or the City’s interactive collection map. Enter the service address and ZIP code. That result is more useful than a citywide list because it connects the property to its actual refuse day and recycling cadence.

This distinction matters in Pittsburgh. The printed 2026 calendar is divided into Northern/Southern and Central/Eastern editions, and recycling weeks differ by zone. A neighborhood’s informal name, mailing address, or position on a familiar map is not a safe substitute for the City’s address result. If you have just moved, manage more than one property, or live near a zone boundary, check each service address separately.

The 2026 schedule in plain language

2026 City holiday-delay dates

The City’s schedule page, last updated June 30, 2026 when we reviewed it, lists the following collection holidays. The City’s general rule is: when a listed holiday falls on or before your collection day, collection moves one day later.

The table is an annual reference, not a statement that every household moves after every holiday. Apply the City’s “on or before” rule to the property’s normal day, and check the official schedule page shortly before the date for its current instructions.

When to put containers at the curb

The City’s 2026 mailer gives residents a clear set-out window:

1. Put refuse and eligible recycling out after 6:00 p.m. on the night before collection.
2. Make sure everything is accessible no later than 6:00 a.m. on collection day.
3. Bring containers back from the curb and store them by 10:00 p.m. on collection day.

“By 6:00 a.m.” is the City’s set-out deadline. Do not treat it as a predicted truck-arrival time.

Use the property’s normal collection location and follow any address-specific City instructions.

How to use the two zone calendars

The 2026 newsletters contain useful month-by-month recycling markings, but they work only after the resident knows which edition applies. Follow this sequence:

1. Search the address in the City’s lookup.
2. Note the normal refuse weekday and next recycling date.
3. Identify the calendar edition associated with the address.
4. Use that edition to plan later every-other-week recycling dates.
5. Recheck the live result after moving, after a long service interruption, or when the City announces a route change.

The calendar colors are a planning aid. They should not be used to infer service from another block, a friend’s address, or a neighborhood-wide social post; use the City’s address result.

What to check before reporting a missed pickup

First confirm that the expected date was correct. Ask these questions in order:

• Was this the property’s regular collection day?
• For recycling, was this the correct every-other-week cycle?
• Did a listed holiday move the date?
• Were materials out and accessible by 6:00 a.m.?
• Were refuse and recycling separated and prepared under the City’s rules?
• Did the City announce a weather suspension or other service change?

If the date and set-out were correct, use Pittsburgh 311 for the missed-service request. The City lists an online 311 request, the 311 short code, and 412-255-2621 on its curbside recycling page. Provide the service address, material type, and scheduled date.

Match the item to the right guide

The schedule answers when a normal City collection occurs. It does not make every household item eligible for that truck.

Moving an ineligible item to the correct weekday does not make it acceptable. Check the material first, especially for refrigerant appliances, electronics, batteries, chemicals, tires, and construction debris.

A two-minute collection-night checklist

• Confirm tomorrow’s service for the exact address.
• Check whether recycling is due this week.
• Check for a holiday or current City service alert.
• Separate refuse from loose, clean, dry, empty recyclables.
• Confirm that any bulky item appears in current City guidance.
• Set materials out after 6:00 p.m. and before the 6:00 a.m. deadline.
• Keep materials at the property’s normal collection location.
• Plan to retrieve containers by 10:00 p.m. after collection.

That process is more dependable than memorizing a date from a search snippet. The City lookup supplies the address-specific answer; this guide makes the surrounding rules easier to apply.
